See how dental implants work in this short film from Newport Family Dentist. The animation introduces the implant, abutment and crown, followed by a look at digital planning with Dr Ahmed Ibrahim.
How dental implants work: three parts
A single-tooth implant restoration usually has three main parts:
- The implant sits in the jawbone and supports the replacement tooth.
- The abutment connects the implant to the crown.
- The crown is the visible replacement tooth used for chewing.
The film separates these parts so you can see how they fit together. Actual components, treatment stages and timing depend on the individual plan.
Planning comes before placement
The second part of the film shows Dr Ahmed Ibrahim, a general dentist at our Newport practice, using a scan and a model to explain planning. Where suitable, a surgical guide helps direct an implant to its planned position. Guided and non-guided approaches are selected for each case.
At Newport Family Dentist, intraoral scanning takes place at the practice. If CBCT imaging is needed, we refer you to an external radiology service. Your dentist explains the proposed treatment, healing stages and individual costs before you decide.
Suitability, risks and alternatives
Implants involve surgery and are not suitable for everyone. Your dentist considers your gums, available bone, medical history and medicines. Possible complications include infection, nerve injury, sinus problems and damage to nearby teeth. Some people need additional treatment before an implant can be considered.
A bridge or removable denture may be an alternative. Ask about the benefits, risks, costs and ongoing care for each option. A short animation cannot show every step or predict your result.
Questions to bring to your consultation
- What are my options for this missing tooth?
- Would I need any treatment before an implant?
- What would the full plan cost, and how long might it take?
- What follow-up and daily care would I need?
